In the Southern Alps, on the border between France and Italy, locals say the way of the mountain must be respected: no one is left out in the cold to die. “The way of the mountain” is a visual overview of how a community has resisted against the non-welcoming migration policies of the French and Italian government.
Due to its proximity to the Italian border, people in transit hike across 2000-meter mountain into France. The French and Italian police constantly survey the border to impede border crossing. This forces people in transit to take greater risks or die trying to cross the border. Nevertheless, Italians and French work together to protect migrants from being left outside to die on the mountain. From providing warm winter clothes and food on the Italian border, to opening an emergency welcome center in Briançon, citizens have mobilized to fill in the hole the European governments have left.
